What is self storage and how does it work?

Self storage is a service offering flexible, do-it-yourself storage for business and domestic customers. We provide clean, dry, individually locked storage units, access to which is available to our customers anytime during opening hours. Your storage unit is locked with your own lock ensuring that only you have access to your goods.

Is Self Storage a new Industry?

The Self Storage Industry started in the United States and Australia some 35 years ago. In the United States there are over 32,000 separate Self Storage facilities offering some 1.5 billion square feet of Self Storage space. The Industry has developed in Europe over the past 20 years where there are now more than 500 facilities. There are over 100 facilities in the Greater London Area alone. In Ireland, there are facilities in Dublin, Cork, Belfast, Limerick, Waterford and Letterkenny.

What does your facility consist of?

We are the largest Self Storage company in Ireland with premises in Dublin, Belfast, Cork and Waterford. A typical facility would have approx. 80,000 square feet of space to let with over 800 self storage units spanning 32 different sizes on four floors to accommodate every possible need.

What are the unit sizes that you have available?

We have over 2400 Units covering 480,000 square feet within our six branches ranging in size from 20/25sq.ft. to 1,000sq.ft. Our units are approximately 10 ft. in height. Simply use the space estimator below to help you identify the size of unit to suit your needs.

Can I transfer to another unit if I find I have too much or too little space?

You are welcome to move to another size unit at any time depending on your storage requirements and our unit availability.

How do I get to you?

Why do I need my own lock?

You need your own lock to ensure that you are the sole key holder for your unit. You can use any padlock you wish or alternatively Padlocks can be purchased at each of our centres.

How much does it cost to store my things with you?

The cost of a storage unit depends upon the size required. If you are not sure how much space you may need, we suggest that you speak to a member of our staff to determine the optimum storage for your requirements. A price can then be quoted on the correct size unit. Belfast Self Storage has a wide range of units and lockers starting from as little as £10 per week plus VAT.

What is included in the price and are there any hidden extras?

We have one simple price based on the storage capacity of each unit and there are no hidden charges. The only additional cost you might want to consider is additional contents insurance if required.

How do I pay for my unit?

We offer a number of payment options, including laser card, credit card, or direct debit. Our fee is payable monthly in advance.

Do I have to sign a lease?

No you don’t. You sign a straightforward standard storage agreement prior to moving into your unit.

Do I have to book a unit?

No, you can simply turn up, fill in your storage agreement and move in immediately. However, if your needs and timing are specific, we would recommend that you book your unit in advance.

Can I move in today?

Yes, a member of our staff will fill in our storage agreement with you. Then you can move your goods in straight away.

How often can I have access to my goods?

You have unlimited access to your goods during our opening hours at no extra charge.

How do I get my goods to you?

You can bring your goods in your own vehicle. We have ample car parking and large sheltered loading/unloading areas at each facility. Alternatively, we can recommend local van hire or removal companies to help with your transportation.

What sort of security do you have?

Our security procedures and technologies are second to none and include the following safeguards:

  • Each unit is locked using your own padlock for added security
  • Access to the storage area is only possible with a unique code for each customer that is only valid for the duration of the self storage rental period
  • The building proper has a master alarm system that will activate and inform the Police of any break-ins
  • Our computerised access system logs who is in the building at all times
  • Further visual protection is provided through 24-Hour closed circuit TV monitoring covering both the interior and exterior of the building

What is the minimum time I can store with you?

The minimum period of storage is 2 weeks. However, we request 14 days notice to vacate your unit.

What is the maximum length I can stay?

There is no maximum storage period and we offer on-going discounts the longer the rental term goes on.

Do you have trolleys available?

There are a number of different size trolleys and pallet trucks available free of charge for customer use.

Do you offer Document Storage?

Yes, we will provide you with your own unit, sized to your individual needs, with or without racking, and you or your staff will look after your own records on your own schedule. You have absolute control over your files and records with your own employees. It also makes economic sense in that you can avoid the high service fees charged by Records Management companies. This is ideal for a small to medium sized professional office, whose valuable office space is being encroached upon by file cabinets, many of whom are only occasionally used. In fact, in some cases, using Document Self Storage can preclude moving to a larger office, or adding on to a building for an expanding business. See Document Storage page.

Will you accept deliveries to my unit?

Yes, provided arrangements have been made, we will accept deliveries on your behalf.

Do you sell boxes and packing supplies?

Yes, we can provide boxes, locks and other packing material. See Packing Material page.

What can I store in my self storage unit?

You can store almost anything in our units exceptions are:

  • Food or perishable goods unless securely packed so that they are protected from vermin.
  • Birds, fish, animals or any other living creatures.
  • Combustible or flammable materials or liquids such as paint, petrol, oil or cleaning solvents, explosives, weapons or ammunition.
  • Chemical, radioactive material, biological agents.
  • Toxic waste, asbestos or other materials of a dangerous nature.
  • Any item which emits any fumes, smell or odour.
  • Any illegal substances, illegal items or goods illegally obtained or compressed gasses.

Do I have to give notice when I leave?

We request 14 days notice of your intention to vacate your unit. At this time a refund will be processed for any unused monies that you have paid. Notice can be given in person, in writing, phone or e-mail.

Is there someone at the facility I can talk to should I have a problem?

There will always be a trained member of staff available during reception opening time.
